Amazon wants your tax data or has blocked your account: what does Amazon check, what do you upload?
The cases that sellers describe in the forum threads we read turn on one question: is your VAT identification number verified at Amazon, and do the details stored with it match the details held by the tax authority? Amazon's help says the address linked to the number must match the address the tax authority holds for that number. Amazon checks EU numbers in the MIAS database. You can only lift a block if you know what Amazon objects to in your case; the notification in Seller Central is the first place to look.

In brief
- What Amazon checks, according to its help: EU VAT numbers in the MIAS database; the address for the number must match the address at the VAT authority.
- Where you maintain the data: Seller account information > Tax information > Place of establishment (number and address), and Business information > Identity information and business address (name and address).
- Waiting times, according to Amazon: the check takes up to 48 hours. If the number still shows "verification pending" after that, contact Seller Support. If a valid number shows as rejected, match name and address and contact Seller Support if it persists after 72 hours.
- From the forum: a seller quotes Amazon's block message: the German VAT ID was not uploaded and verified in time, or the proof of OSS participation with the number used for the OSS return is missing.
- Proof: what Amazon asks for in your case is in the notification. Have ready: the VAT authority's page or your VAT certificate (as Amazon's help calls it) and your OSS participation confirmation.
- Help only partly documented: further Amazon help pages on German tax obligations and on the OSS cannot be read without JavaScript. We do not quote them; look them up in Seller Central help.
What does Amazon check?
This can be documented from Amazon's help page "VAT registration", which we could open:
- Saving the number: go to Seller account information > Tax information > Place of establishment and add a VAT identification number. There you choose the registered address linked to the number. The address in your seller account must match the address shown on the VAT authority's website for that number.
- The check: Amazon verifies EU numbers using the MIAS database. It takes up to 48 hours; if it still says "verification pending" afterwards, contact Seller Support.
- Rejected although valid: make sure the registered name and address at the VAT authority (or on your VAT certificate) match the details under Business information > Identity information and business address. Read the notifications about the number and follow them. If the problem persists 72 hours after the change, contact Seller Support.
- Error "attempted fraudulent tax declaration": according to Amazon it means you repeatedly entered a number that could not be verified. Seller Support helps here too.
- Changing the business address: Amazon notes this can trigger an additional verification.
- Changing the number: you cannot edit a number, only remove it and add a new one. If you remove your only number, the VAT Calculation Service is deactivated automatically (more: Amazon VAT Calculation Service). How to store the number: Add your VAT ID in Amazon Seller Central.
What sellers report in the forum
The Amazon seller forum has had a discussion "Blocked because of tax data / OSS" for about five years, with 56 replies. One seller describes it like this: first a mail said the BZSt data did not match the data at Amazon. On checking, an outdated address turned out to be stored as the default. After the correction the check showed "under review" for several days. The next day the account was blocked, with the reason that the German VAT ID was not uploaded and verified in time or that proof of OSS participation with the number used for the OSS return was missing. He had a valid VAT ID, a tax number and the OSS registration and had uploaded the OSS confirmation.
Other sellers in the same thread report:
- an address at Amazon without a house number although the street was right, and the answer that the data did not match the tax office;
- a confirmed number with a green tick and a blocked account anyway;
- the "Reactivate account" button leading only to an Amazon page about the German tax obligations;
- automatic replies saying the case was submitted through the wrong channel;
- after a release, another mail about a mismatch between BZSt and Amazon data.
These are experiences of individual sellers from around five years ago, not statements from Amazon. How fast your case is resolved cannot be derived from them.
Which proof do you upload?
Which documents Amazon wants in your case is in the notification. The sources we opened name these:
- The VAT authority's page or your VAT certificate: Amazon's help names both as the yardstick for name and address linked to the number.
- Your OSS participation confirmation: the block message the seller quotes asks for proof that you take part in the Union OSS, together with the number you use for the OSS return. The BZSt writes that you apply for participation stating your VAT identification number; the seller reports he uploaded his OSS confirmation. How registration works: OSS registration in Germany.
- For a local Spanish VAT number, Amazon explicitly asks you to attach a VAT certificate to your correspondence.
This is our suggested order, not an Amazon procedure:
- Read the notification and note exactly what is missing.
- Compare name and address at the tax authority with Seller Central, character by character (house number, spelling).
- Correct differences in Seller Central and wait (48 and 72 hours respectively).
- If it stays, contact Seller Support and attach the documents. Keep a record of the date, case number and uploaded files.
- If the authority's page does not show your number as valid, contact the competent tax authority; according to its help Amazon checks against that data.
Amazon asks for OSS proof: must I show my OSS return?
When Amazon asked sellers by mail about five years ago to provide the VAT return filed through the OSS in Seller Central, one seller asked in the forum: "What do my other sales have to do with Amazon?" Other sellers in the same thread answered that the account only has a selection field for whether you use OSS and in which country, and that a registration confirmation should be enough. These are opinions of individual sellers, not statements from Amazon. What Amazon asks for in your case is in your notification. The block message from the other thread speaks of proof of OSS participation together with the number, not of your return with sales; whether Amazon may ask for more, we cannot answer from the sources.
Common mistakes
- Not reading the notification and uploading documents at random.
- Comparing name and address with the wrong source. According to Amazon the yardstick is the authority, not your commercial register or your website.
- Entering the number wrongly several times. This can trigger the error "attempted fraudulent tax declaration".
- Removing your only number. The VAT Calculation Service is then deactivated.
- Not having your OSS registration at hand. File the confirmation when you receive it.
How VAT GPT helps
VAT GPT is the tax software for Amazon and eBay sellers in Germany: your OSS return first, then VAT, EÜR, trade tax and income tax, calculated and filed in one place.
- You upload your Amazon or eBay reports as CSV. VAT GPT reads them and sorts the sales into Germany and OSS.
- VAT GPT calculates the OSS return for all EU countries; you check it.
- With Pro you send the OSS return to the BZSt.
