TikTok Shop VAT in Germany: what TikTok handles and what you file

TikTok does not deduct VAT for you and does not file a tax return for you. TikTok Shop offers a VAT calculation service that works out the tax on sales to EU customers at checkout. You still report and pay it yourself: in Germany with the VAT return and, if you use the OSS scheme, with the quarterly OSS return. This page shows what TikTok says it handles in its seller help, what applies to EU customers and where your figures come from.

In brief

  • No deduction by TikTok: According to TikTok Shop the platform files no tax return in your name and only helps with the calculation.
  • VAT calculation service (VCS): works out the VAT per order for buyers in the EU. TikTok's condition: a VAT ID registered for OSS and valid in the EU system MIAS.
  • Stays with you: the VAT return, the quarterly OSS return, paying the tax, your invoices to buyers.
  • EU customers: If you are established in Germany only, German VAT applies up to 10,000 euros net of distance sales to other EU countries. Above that the destination country's VAT applies (section 3c(4) UStG). The BZSt treats the OSS registration that TikTok requires for the VAT calculation service as a waiver of this threshold.
  • Figures: TikTok gives the order export with tax columns only when the VAT calculation service is set up. Platform fees come as invoices with tax rate and tax amount.

Does TikTok deduct the VAT?

No. TikTok Shop says so in its seller help: you collect VAT from the buyer, TikTok Shop helps you calculate the right amount, and you report and pay it to the state. "TikTok Shop does NOT file tax returns in your name" (translated from the German page).

The VAT calculation service (VCS) calculates the tax per sale to customers in the EU automatically. TikTok lists what it does not do:

  • It does not file your tax return. You do that yourself or with a tax adviser.
  • It does not create invoices in your name. You keep issuing your own.
  • It does not give you a complete VAT report.

Who can use the VAT calculation service?

According to the TikTok page (dated May 28, 2026, valid for Germany among others) the service is available to sellers registered for VAT. As an EU seller you also need a VAT ID registered for OSS that is active in MIAS. You check beforehand that it shows as "valid" on the European Commission's site. TikTok writes that only sellers with a valid OSS-registered VAT ID can activate the service in the EU. So a seller not in OSS cannot switch it on, according to this page.

Setup as TikTok describes it:

  1. In Seller Center go to Finance, Invoices, Tax information and choose "Add calculation".
  2. Confirm or add the OSS-registered VAT ID.
  3. Activate the service; before that you confirm your VAT-registered address.
  4. Set a product tax code (PTC) for the whole shop. It sets the default rate of your products. For items with another rate you can set a PTC on the product; it takes precedence.
  5. Choose how tax applies to shipping: like the product or at the standard rate.
  6. Submit.

TikTok does not decide for you which rate fits your product. When unsure it points to the tax adviser or the tax authority's guide.

What applies to customers in other EU countries?

TikTok writes that a seller established in one EU country who sells to private customers in another must report the VAT on those sales and issue correct tax invoices. Depending on sales volume and warehouse location, registration in the destination country may also be needed.

The law is more exact. For distance sales the place of supply is in principle the country where the goods arrive at the customer (section 3c(1) UStG). There is an exception: if you are established in one EU country only and your distance sales and certain electronic services to private customers in other EU countries together did not pass 10,000 euros in the previous year and do not pass it this year, German law stays in place (section 3c(4) UStG). The BZSt counts the amount without VAT. You can waive this threshold towards your tax office; the waiver binds you for at least two calendar years (section 3c(4) sentences 2 and 3 UStG). The BZSt already treats the OSS registration notice as a waiver. So if you register for OSS only to use the VAT calculation service, your distance sales are taxed in the destination country from the start of the registration, even below 10,000 euros.

Above that you can join the OSS scheme and report all EU countries in one return to the BZSt instead of registering in each country. You file the return electronically every quarter by the end of the following month (April 30, July 31, October 31, January 31); you pay the tax to the federal treasury by then. TikTok is clear: the VAT calculation service calculates the tax, you still submit the quarterly OSS return and pay the VAT collected. More: OSS registration in Germany, OSS return, EU OSS threshold.

Which taxes do you pay as a TikTok Shop seller?

Which taxes apply depends on your situation, above all whether you are a small business and where you sell. Besides VAT there are the taxes on your profit: if you sell as a trade business, you usually work out the profit with the cash-basis income statement (section 4(3) EStG), it counts as business income for income tax (section 2(1) EStG), and trade tax can apply, for sole traders only above an allowance (section 2(1), section 11(1) GewStG). Whether you charge VAT or are exempt is in Small business rule: limits from 2026. An overview of an online seller's taxes: Taxes for online sellers. Where do the figures come from?

TikTok describes two sources:

  • Order export: In Seller Center under "Manage orders" click Export. If you set up the VAT calculation service, the Excel file has the columns product tax amount, product tax rate, tax amount on shipping and tax rate on shipping. If you only set a PTC on product level and did not set up the service, this breakdown does not appear.
  • Invoices from TikTok: Under Finance, Invoices you download the platform's invoices as PDF and the matching Excel file with invoice details per order. According to TikTok only the platform service fee and the logistics fee appear on these invoices; the file has columns for tax rate and tax amount.

The export does not replace a VAT report: TikTok itself says the service does not provide a complete one. For your return you need, per order, the destination country, the net amount and the tax rate.

You also issue the invoices to your buyers yourself: according to TikTok via the "Contact seller" button, where you upload the invoice as an image (PDF is not supported yet), or by e-mail if the buyer gives an address.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking the VAT calculation service reports the tax. It only calculates. You file the return.
  • Trying to set up the service without an OSS number. TikTok says it does not work; the number must show as valid in MIAS.
  • Setting only a product-level PTC and then missing the tax columns in the export. They exist only with the service set up.
  • Comparing total revenue with the 10,000-euro threshold. Only distance sales and certain services to private customers in other EU countries count.
  • Forgetting the invoice to the buyer. TikTok does not issue it for you.
